The Rare Florida Humpback Whale!

Though humpbacks aren’t frequently seen off our coast, there have been dozens of sightings this winter—including by some very lucky divers in South Florida.

I spotted this apparent juvenile off Melbourne Beach earlier today. Based on other recent sightings, I suspected it might be a humpback, but I still approached it as if it were a right whale—keeping my distance. I’m far away on purpose, I’m not directly over the whale, and I’m using optical zoom. No photo/video is worth disturbing these animals.

With our murky Central Florida waters, it’s impossible to overstate how important it is for boaters to stay alert. Whales can be nearly invisible just below the surface, surfacing unpredictably for breaths. Any splash or disturbance on the water should be treated as a potential whale.

If you see a whale, report it immediately so it can be tracked and nearby vessels can be alerted:

I have so much to be grateful for in 2024. For me,

I have so much to be grateful for in 2024. For me, it was a record year—chock full of adventure, exploration, fun, and joy. Thankful to be able to take our lives on the road as we continued to work and homeschool in different timezones and continents. There were weeks of 4AM or 12AM Zoom calls and sacrificing sleep to tackle Asana tasks. The decision seemed easy as our days included stumbling across some of the most beautiful terrain and ocean I’ve ever seen.

I’m thankful for the opportunities this lifestyle has given us and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. These are 20 photos spanning many of the beautiful places we visited this year.

In total, I snapped more than 12,000 photos this year and over five terabytes of video! I’m looking forward to working through my galleries over the next few months at home so I can share more with you all and update my website.

at hiding in plain sight—a tru

The absolute 🐐 at hiding in plain sight—a true master of camouflage. It was hard to color grade this video correctly without blending the lines of where the edges of the flounder were vs. the sand. I decided to go in tight when videoing this because I had found from experience videos of such a camouflaged fish are difficult to see. This tight you can see how it uses its dorsal and anal fins to seemingly “crawl” across the ocean floor without attracting attention by predator or prey.
